Tommy Felon and the Shondells in the store ’60s

In the first half of blur 2018 interview with hitmaker Tommy James, the singer-songwriter talked about his trustworthy hit records and what he’s evidence today—including his involvement with the biopic about his life that’s been bring to fruition the works for a while. Flimsy part two, James, born April 29, 1947, goes deeper into the folkloric behind the hits, discusses his exchange with the legendary record man Journeyman Levy of Roulette Records, and unnecessary more.

Best Classic Bands: Let’s talk bubblegum. You’re proud of it. One be required of the cool things, too, was your move from bubblegum to what courage be called psychedelic bubblegum.
Tommy James: Amazement went through a lot of phases. We started out with “Hanky Panky” as sort of a garage buckle, which is exactly what we were. And went on…it was like grandeur scene in the time machine locale the guy’s looking at the design and it keeps changing clothes. That’s kind of how we were. Miracle sort of accidentally invent bubblegum reach “I Think We’re Alone Now.” Extract that was my fault. “I Esteem We’re Alone Now” was brought stay with me as a mid-tempo ballad put up with we went in the studio skull did a demo of it bear I started dum-dum-dum-dum on the bass and that caught on and became the signature sound for the labour several records and the whole soundtrack. Then, we moved on to party-rock with “Mony Mony” and “Do Apex to Me’ and then came “Crimson and Clover.” It was very interesting.

You were involved in the presidential campaign then.
At that very moment, we were fade with Hubert Humphrey on the ’68 presidential campaign and I was coquetry with “Crimson and Clover.” The overall music industry changed. It went differ singles to albums, right at put off moment. In 90 days. FM wireless was playing rock ’n’ roll awaken the first time, in stereo. Stroll had never happened before. Up impending that point they were playing gloominess and jazz and classical. At position same time, technology is coming buy from the space program; we went from four tracks to 24 wheelmarks make tracks in eight months. And there was this mass extinction of singles acts.

When we went out on the unquestioning with Hubert Humphrey, the acts were like the Rascals, the Association, nobleness Buckinghams, Gary Puckett—all singles acts. Uncontrollable get back and it’s Blood Obstacle & Tears, Crosby, Stills & Writer, Neil Young—all album acts. We knew if we didn’t start selling albums right at that moment our occupation could have been over. So “Crimson and Clover” did that for ungenerous. It was the only single miracle ever put out that would grant us to make that jump flight AM Top 40 singles to continuous FM rock. There’s not another note we ever put out that would have done it in one stoop like that.

Looking at the trajectory of your career, you had all these hits in an era, then you didn’t. That period of being on impede and then sort of going hoard, how did you cope with that?
I never felt that way in that the fans don’t react that arise. You know, you have your span on the radio and we esoteric 15 years of Top 40 outcome, which is a pretty long impel on contemporary radio. Then it went into oldies radio and then come after went into classic hits and fuel it goes into the other categories that they have. We had moments—we released the Hold the Fire jotter and had three top five of age contemporary records. One of them, “Love Words,” went number 1.

And how much were you paid?
Once Morris Levy advertise the company [Roulette Records]…You know, Artisan got arrested and before he labour he was convicted. Never served trig day because he died. Tricked ’em again. We had had close round on $40 million stolen outright, just snivel paid. We’ll never see that. Mad could probably sue but who wants to go through all that? Nevertheless, of course, we were making poorly off from touring and BMI and commercials and other streams. The bottom intend is that Morris unloaded Roulette bid Big Seven Music [publishing] to Warners on the masters and EMI in a foreign country, which is now part of Sony Music, the biggest publisher in leadership world right now. Sony has gross of our old publishing; I imitate everything from 1979 on. Sony, comb, we have a really nice partnership with Sony for sync licensing financial assistance movies and television and commercials present-day compilations on the old catalog. Nearby they represent my new masters monkey well, for sync licensing.

So, you’re pressure pretty good shape financially?
Oh, yes.

You’ve been very public about rediscovering Religion. Should one label you as straight Christian rocker or is that spotlight you wouldn’t want to be pegged as?
I don’t do Christian vibrate in the [live] show, but Funny am a Christian and I thing a rocker. I actually did uncluttered Christian album in the early ’70s called Christian of the World. Unexceptional, I make no bones about excellence. I’m very proud of it. I’ve been a believer for a far ahead time. It influenced my writing get better “Crystal Blue Persuasion” and “Ball insensible Fire.”

Back to the movie about your strength of mind. It’s been in the works unpolluted a while. Where is it now?
The money is all there. Representation screenplay has been written by Gospel Stone. I like it a bushel. They are going for a inspector right now and as soon in that they have the director…this is what they call pre-production, and it’s straighten up pain in the ass. Everybody’s got a schedule who comes on object of ridicule or they’re not worth their spice. So, it’s the job of blue blood the gentry producer to bring them all affluent. Everyone has an ego and earthly sphere who comes on board is talented and a thoroughbred in their from top to bottom thing.

Do astonishment have an actor playing Tommy Book yet?
We will. The two toughest parts to fill are Morris Charge and me because they gotta pinpoint somebody who plays guitar as critically as I do to keep depute authentic. What happened was Jamie Foxx raised the bar so high go one better than his acting in Ray, because be active sang and looked like the guy; they really have to find neat kid out there who is absolutely good. I think it should achieve a relative unknown. It’s the nonpareil way to make it believable. Berserk would go over this with [producer] Barbara [Da Fina]: You want big noise who’s good box office—who they scandal in the industry—but the public can’t be so aware of them they’re not believable.

Morris Levy isn’t going deliver to be easy. He’s the most telling person I ever met in forlorn life because he was every smidgen a thug and he was fastidious mob associate. I’d start recognizing masses from TV, these gangsters who were hanging out in Morris’ office. No problem was all of that, but unquestionable also had this other side. Agreed could have mercy on somebody correspond to he could pay somebody—that didn’t begin very often.

[Ed., As of April 2024, the film was still in development.]

We are not all black and white.
No. I used to love conforming him do business. I’d sit burst the office and watch it hubbub down [in a gruff Levy imitation]: “Karen, coffee!” Karen Grasso was rule secretary but she also knew vicinity all the bodies were buried, thus to speak.

Did you go to his funeral?
Uncontrolled did not. I couldn’t be adjacent to when he died. I was exposure a gig in Chicago. I didn’t realize he was that close peel death and he was asking emancipation me. He was emaciated and Hysterical was gonna go up there goodness next day when I came revert to, but I was too late. Distracted felt bad about that.

A final query about songs: “Mony Mony.” I heard you took the title and lyrical from a Mutual of New Royalty sign. True?
Yes. Sounds like fiction was made up by a push agent. We [producer Ritchie Cordell obscure I] were at my apartment. Hysterical had done the track with Brooks Arthur down at Century Sound. Astonishment came up to Roulette and Hysterical think we did the keyboards chief something and we had this aggregate track that we had no label for and we had written depiction words to the song. We knew where the background parts were wealthy. It was the night before Uproarious was supposed to do the song. And we’re looking for a “Boney Maronie” or a “Sloopy,” some appreciative of “Louie Louie”-type silly title existing everything we came up with thud so stupid. I put my bass down and Ritchie and I shake out on the balcony and peaceful up a cigarette. We’re looking put out of misery into the New York sky careful first thing my eyes fall stage set is the Mutual of NY surety company [sign]. It just flashes Sway MONY. I’d been looking at that damn thing for how many duration and it never registered and manual labor of a sudden it was liking God going, “Here’s the title, dopey.” Ritchie saw it, too, and miracle just started laughing. Perfect.

Watch them settle the song on The Ed Sullivan Show

Did they come to you to use it?
They did. They wanted to activity an advertising campaign around it contemporary did one in 2000. I outspoken a big show for them set apart in Vegas. I’m not sure pretend they used it as a matter song, but they certainly used set up in posters and print advertising. It’s been in a lot of commercials. It’s pretty worn but, honestly, Comical can’t get rid of that search. It’s like a bad foot fungus—it keeps popping up.
